Who comes to us

You might recognise yourself here.

  • Your results came back normal, and you still don’t feel like yourself.
  • It started with one thing. Now it’s sleep, energy, gut and mood, and nobody is looking at them together.
  • You’re the one carrying the folder: results, letters and a medicine list, from one clinician to the next.
  • You’ve read everything. You can see you’re stuck; you can’t yet see the way through.
  • Something changed (a birth, a loss, a new job, perimenopause) and your body hasn’t caught up.
  • You want to understand what’s happening before anyone decides what to do about it.

None of these is a diagnosis, and you don’t need to fit one to book.

The care team

You’re entering the house.

Our whole model is integrative and multidisciplinary. We don’t let all of your care fall on one practitioner’s shoulders. A team is coordinated around your needs, and it works from one shared record, so you stop being the courier for your own story.

Who leads

Nurse practitioners or functional medicine doctors lead your care, and decide with you what to look into and what to do next.

Who’s with you between visits

Registered nurses support you through the pathway, with nurse check-ins between appointments at no charge.

One shared record

Everyone on your team works from one Sohma record. With your consent, we request your records from your GP.

Four steps

How it works, in order.

For persistent symptoms, or several concerns that overlap, when you want the whole picture looked at together.

Nurse check-ins between visits are free. All fees, and how Medicare works.

  1. Initial consultation

Your history, your symptom timeline and previous results, and your sleep, nutrition, stress and daily life, looked at together.

    Who books it: you.

  2. Testing, where it could change your care

Such as blood work, microbiome testing or a full health assessment. Each test is explained and priced before it’s ordered, and only suggested when it could change your plan.

Who arranges it: we do, with you.

Priced separately, before anything is ordered.

  3. Results and Care Plan

Your results brought together into a written, prioritised plan, kept in your shared Sohma record.

Who books it: if we ordered your tests, we arrange it with you once the results are in. If your results came from elsewhere, book it yourself.

  4. Focused Clinical Reviews, as you need them

Your plan, new results, or a concern you want looked at closely, with nurse check-ins between visits.

Who books it: you, when you need one.

Which pathway is for me?

Sohma has two ways in. Both start with one appointment, in person or by telehealth.

The other pathway Alternative Medicine Pathway For people exploring an alternative approach to their treatment, or wanting a considered review of the care they already have. Starts with a first appointment, 35 min, $179

The approach

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine asks why a problem is happening, not only what to call it. It reads your body as connected systems, because a problem that shows up in one place often starts somewhere else.

The gut, hormones, immune response, metabolism and nervous system work as one. So we look at the whole timeline: when it started, what changed around then, and how the pieces have pulled on each other since.

Integrative medicine is the wider model it sits inside at Sohma. Conventional, evidence-informed medicine and complementary approaches, coordinated under one plan by registered health practitioners.

Plain English

Five words people mix up.

Functional medicine
A way of thinking: it looks at the body as interacting systems and works back towards why a problem is happening, not only what to call it.
Integrative medicine
The umbrella: conventional, evidence-informed medicine and complementary approaches, coordinated under one clinical plan by registered health practitioners. It’s what we practise.
Holistic care
A lens, not a discipline: body, mind and daily life considered together. Integrative medicine is holistic by design.
Naturopathy
A separate profession with its own training and scope. Naturopaths aren’t registered medical practitioners.
Lifestyle medicine
Nutrition, sleep, movement and stress, used as care in their own right. Part of how integrative medicine works, not a separate aisle.

Good to know

How fees work

Medicare
Rebates may apply. Reception can confirm your expected rebate and out-of-pocket cost before you book, by phone or in person. Cameron’s consultations don’t attract a Medicare rebate.
In person or telehealth
The same fee either way. Medicare rebates are generally better for face-to-face visits, and telehealth rebates usually need one face-to-face visit with us in the past 12 months.
Tests and medicines
Anything beyond the appointment, like tests, medicines or other services, is discussed and priced separately, before it’s ordered.
What a consultation covers
A consultation doesn’t guarantee a particular treatment, or that we can take over your care from another provider.

Before you book

Questions people ask first

Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly, in person or by telehealth.
In person or telehealth?
Either, at the same fee. In person is preferred for the initial consultation; phone and video are available too.
Will I need tests?
Not necessarily. Bring the results you already have. Any further test is explained and priced before it’s ordered, and only suggested when it could change your plan.
My results came back normal, but I don’t feel right. Can you help?
It’s one of the most common reasons people come, and it’s worth taking seriously. A result can sit inside the normal range while you still don’t feel like yourself. What we offer is an unhurried look at the whole pattern, not a promised outcome.
I already have recent results. Where do I start?
Bring them to your initial consultation. If your results came from elsewhere and you want them reviewed and turned into a plan, you can book a Results and Care Plan appointment yourself.
Will you talk to my GP?
With your consent, we request your records from your GP, so your team works from the whole picture.
